I love split pea soup, its one of those homey, hearty, thick soups that is perfect for a rainy day. I had a couple ham bones (one from the glazed ham and one from the beans I made earlier this week) and along with some leftover ham, it was a must make dish.
Making this soup is an easy thing, but if you want to make it a stellar pot of soup, use a smoked ham hock. It just makes it that much better tasting!

- 2 cups of split green peas. soaked overnight in a big bowl of water. rinse and place in crockpot
- 4-5 cups of stock
- 2 tbs dry mustard
- few splashes of worcestershire sauce
- 1 white onion chopped small
- 2 tbs minced garlic or use garlic powder if you have any
- 2 cups ham chopped small
- Salt to taste
- LOTS of black pepper
- 1 smoked pork hock** or ham bones with some meat on them
Instructions
- Combine all the ingredients in a pot.
- Simmer in a crockpot for 8 hours on low OR bring to boil in a large pot and then simmer for a few hours. You want the peas to break down into mush and the soup to be THICK THICK THICK!
- ** Most important ingredient! Adds so much flavour.
- If using a full smoked pork hock, when the soup is almost done, remove from the pot, cut and cube any meat, place meat and the bone back into the pot.
