Apple betty, apple crisp, apple crumble, this old school, delicious dessert is not only easy to make, but loved by all. I had some apples that were at the end of their lifespan, and I really didn’t want to throw them out. Being cooked with some butter and brown sugar, with a crunchy crumble on top, it makes for a perfect fall dessert.
I remember apple crisp from when I was a kid, so the recipe has been around a long time. We all have a variation of apple crisp, this is mine.

Apple Crisp
Ingredients
The Filling
- 4 apples peeled, cored, and cut into slices
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons cold butter diced in 1/4" inch pieces
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
The Topping
- 3/4 cup brown sugar packed
- 1/4 cup all purpose flour
- 3/4 cup regular oatmeal/rolledm oats
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 1/2 cup pecan pieces
- 1/3 cup melted butter
Instructions
- Peel then cut the apples into quarters, core them, and slice into 1/4 inch thick slices.
- Add the remaining filling ingredients, tossing to mix.
- At this point I like to drizzle with a couple tablespoons of caramel sauce and lightly toss. Not a necessary step, just adds flavor.
- Pour into a PAM sprayed 8x8" pan.
- Combine the topping ingredients and mix until you have a crumbled texture.
- Spread over the apples.
- Bake at 350°F for 35-40 minutes until the top has browned.
- Let cool a bit before serving.
